In recent years, the sea turtle population has declined due to many factors, one being artificial lighting. Lighting near the shore may cause hatchlings to become disoriented and wander inland, where they can die of dehydration or predators. Although lighting is essential in keeping areas safe and illuminated, many fixtures have a damaging effect on turtles and other wildlife.
-
Turtle-friendly lighting aims to minimize the ecological impact that traditional lighting can have on turtles and wildlife, especially near oceans and beaches.  Turtle Friendly fixtures help reduce sea turtle disorientation while also providing illuminated area for public places. These Turtle Friendly fixtures direct light down towards the ground where it is needed, and also shields the light from being visible from the ocean.

IMPORTANT TO KEEP IN MIND...
  • Wall mounts must be downward directed with a maximum mounting height of 8 feet from the floor.
  • Not for use above the first habitable floor when located on the shore perpendicular or beachside of a structure.
  • Additional shielding may be necessary if directly or indirectly visible from the beach.
  • This particular certification is specific to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. As part of project scoping, please check local ordinances.
